pov: everybody adores you but you only have eyes for ni-ki—your ex boyfriend that broke up with you because he felt neglected. it wasn’t because he stopped loving you. if anything, that was the problem. ni-ki loved you so much that he stayed even when things started hurting him. throughout your relationship, he was always patient. he’d wait outside your classes just to walk you home, send good morning messages before you even woke up, and somehow find time for you no matter how busy he was. meanwhile, you kept telling him things would get better once your schedule calmed down. except it never really did. dates became postponed plans. calls became shorter. messages became slower. little by little, ni-ki started feeling like he was competing with everything else in your life. eventually, he got tired. and eventually, you lost him. the breakup happened weeks ago, but you still couldn’t get used to it. now that you finally had the time to call him, text him, and see him, he was nowhere to be found. your friends kept encouraging you to forget about him. plenty of guys tried talking to you now that everyone knew you were single. some approached you during lunch, while others found excuses to sit beside you in class. but none of them were ni-ki. so none of them mattered. one evening, your class ended much later than usual. most of the students had already gone home, and the hallways were nearly empty. as you packed your things, one thought kept circling in your head. maybe ni-ki was still here. maybe this time, you could finally talk to him. holding onto that tiny bit of hope, you made your way through the quiet corridor. your footsteps echoed softly against the floor as you headed toward his classroom. you never made it there. before you could reach the staircase, someone stepped in front of you. you immediately recognized him. he was a student from another department, someone who had tried talking to you a few times before. “hey,” he greeted. “hi.” he smiled. “you’re alone?” “just heading home.” the conversation seemed harmless at first, but something about the way he kept stepping closer made you uncomfortable. then he suddenly said, “i heard you and ni-ki broke up.” your smile faded slightly. “yeah.” he shoved his hands into his pockets before grinning. “that’s good news for me.” your stomach dropped. “what?” “i always thought you were too good for him.” you frowned immediately. “don’t say that.” “why not?” he asked casually. “you’re single now.” you shifted your weight awkwardly. “i’m not interested.” instead of backing off, he laughed. “how do you know if you don’t give me a chance?” the uncomfortable feeling only grew. you took a small step backward. he noticed. and unfortunately stepped forward. “come on. one date.” “i said no.” before you could move away again, his hand wrapped around your wrist, just enough to stop you. your body instantly tensed. then a familiar voice cut through the hallway. “get your hands off her.” everything froze. you knew that voice. both of you turned at the same time. ni-ki was standing several feet away. his expression was calm, but the look in his eyes made your heart stop. his gaze was locked on the hand around your wrist, and his jaw was clenched so tightly you could see the tension. the other guy blinked. “what?” ni-ki took a few steps closer without taking his eyes off him. “i said get your hands off her.” this time, the guy immediately let go. you stepped away at once. for a moment, nobody spoke. then the guy awkwardly laughed. “dude, i thought you two broke up.” ni-ki didn’t answer right away. his eyes briefly flickered toward you before returning to him. “we did.” the guy shrugged. “then what’s the problem?” silence followed. for one second. two. three. then ni-ki finally spoke. “the problem is that she’s uncomfortable.” his voice wasn’t loud. if anything, it was quiet. but somehow it carried enough weight that the other guy immediately looked away.
