Cover crops are an essential tool, even in the smallest backyard garden. One of my favorites is buckwheat. We sow it between spring and fall crops because it’s fast, beautiful, and supports soil health. In about 30 days, it’s ready to terminate. Instead of tilling it in, I use a simple crimping tool to pinch the stems, stopping the plant and letting it die back naturally while the roots stay in the soil. This tool is simply a piece of angle iron with a rope for a handle. The other handheld tool is my Razor! You can find out more about it at MindfulFarmer.Co That one practice creates a ripple effect. The flowers feed pollinators, and afterward the mulch protects the soil, reduces moisture loss, suppresses weeds, and slowly returns nutrients as it breaks down. The roots also feed soil biology, build organic matter, and improve water and root movement for the next crop. Cover crops are one way I try to grow more mindfully, supporting soil, wildlife, and long-term productivity. Every season is a chance to leave the garden better than we found it and you can do that with the help of cover crops. Be sure to follow and stay in touch as we will be adding several cover crops seeds to our website this winter!
