Understanding your where your shame lives is great, but knowing it consciously unfortunately doesn’t change your subconscious MO. How do you change the program that’s running in the background?

I think you explain it well but miss out the relationship between healthy shame and toxic shame and can only change our relationship with it as we can’t rid ourselves of it

First, thank you for sharing this wisdom. I’m looking at my map and I’m observing how it has evolved across time. For instance, I now feel shame about my age, and even my appearance. It almost feels like there is a baseline level of shame, but that the distribution shifts with time. I’m also seeing how the ways in which I’ve tried to address feelings of shame have typically generated more shame, even as I’ve become increasingly self-aware.

If you are mapping is that for the triggers of shame or the original message? As the latter is difficult as it happened so young

My father was heavy on the put downs. I grew up believing was intrinsically stupid and not very bright. This has effected my confidence greatly, unfortunately. It's not easy to brush it off. Shame clings on. Raise your children up, not down.

I once heard someone say that there was such a thing as “healthy shame.”

I get it. It’s the child self that creates the shame, which is an internal negative belief and generalization about self from a story that happened from someone in authority. The generalization is something I hadn’t thought about but agree with completely. A person in power makes a negative claim (or the child self-interprets it as such), which turns into a negative self-belief and spirals into a victim.

In my therapy approach i use the dynamics of the wounded feminine and the wounded masculine (the mother and the father) i use them as mirrors. I then list and map the shame (in situations, beliefs, projections and also cognitive distorted beliefs) so if the mother had shame, I would root it back to where that shame was held, in relationships, money, religion, god, family, education, cultural and historical, intimacy ( see if there was any cheating involved or no) then I would see the masculine ( the father and see the roots there same as the wounded feminine. Then I would list things from cultural, religious, social, economical, institutional structural, education, family relationships and also friends and see in each of what projections and beliefs were around these. then I would identify shame in each one of these and see how the wounded feminine and masculine traits were also projected throughout my life and root it from there. Once when that is brought, shame would then be felt and released. That is how I would do it.

My shame comes from something traumatic happening to me at a young age. I’ve kept it secret for years and it’s affected everything in my life … I’m not recognising the patterns but I don’t know how to starve it. It feels so much like a part of me … I don’t know who I am without it

@Jon Skelton Pearson Jon, could you please give us any tips on how to talk to people who are extremely shame-driven? It’s so hard, they even take compliments for insults😳 It’d be extremely useful 🙏
