Think about it like this. As a mother, when you tell your child to do something good and they come back from school saying people made fun of them for doing that good, do you then tell them to stop doing that good? Or do you tell them to continue doing that good and never let the negativity bring them down. Now remember that Allah loves us more than a mother loves their child, so us disobeying his command because our environment made us feel uncomfortable, how displeasing must that be.

Nothing we choose is totally “uninfluenced”—what we like, wear, put on or take off, even what we find pretty is shaped by culture and people around us. But I wouldn’t reframe your past as “not having a choice.” It reflected your values at the time—and values can change. Freedom isn’t zero influence. It’s noticing those influences and still deciding what you stand by and being able to change how you like to change.

Dina, I really hope you see this. 💗You have no idea how much I relate to this. And as a small girl I grew up watching you. One of my the places I got most of my courage from to put my foot down on my decision was by seeing you. Because somehow wearing it was my choice but when I tried to remove it it felt like I had no choice. So it was truly not easy

It’s been a couple years since I’m wearing it and loving it , but it’s been a long decade of struggling with it , nobody knew this but when I had my first baby I wasn’t wearing it out when I was going out alone , had a major identity struggle . May Allah make it easy for us all❤️

i dont blame u. i wear it now and did start at age of 30 and have 2 girls and one has said ahe doesnt want to wear it and I said 'fine' because id rather she wears if and when and when she really wants to

I wear it when I want to wear it (outside of prayer) and every time I choose to do so, even if it's once a month, that intentionality feels more significant to me than anything!
