Smart people often struggle with public speaking _because_ they’re smart not in spite of it. Here’s what’s usually going on: 1. They overthink everything Smart = high pattern recognition + analysis. On stage that turns into: - Catastrophizing: “What if I sound dumb? What if they poke holes in my argument?” - Mental editing in real-time: While talking, they’re already critiquing every sentence. That kills flow. - Fear of being imprecise: Smart people hate being wrong or oversimplifying. Public speaking forces you to do both. 2. The “Curse of Knowledge” If you understand something deeply, it’s hard to remember what it’s like _not_ to know it. Result: You go too technical, too fast, or skip the story/setup. The audience gets lost, and you feel like you failed. That loop makes you more nervous next time. 3. Perfectionism + High Standards If you’re used to being the person who “gets it right,” speaking is uncomfortable. - You can’t edit after you say it. - There are no slides to hide behind. - One awkward pause feels like a disaster to you, but the audience barely notices. 4. Less practice in “performance mode” Many smart people built their identity on writing, analysis, 1:1 problem solving — not performing. Public speaking is a skill, not an IQ test. Athletes practice; smart people often expect to be good without reps. When they’re not instantly great, it feels threatening to their identity. 5. Anxiety gets intellectualized Instead of “I’m nervous,” it becomes: “Let me research 20 more sources so I’m 100% prepared.” More prep ≠ less anxiety if the fear is about judgment, not content. You can know the material cold and still freeze. The ironic part Audiences actually like speakers who are slightly imperfect, conversational, and human. Smart people often try to be encyclopedias instead. Audiences disconnect. What helps smart speakers specifically: - Trade accuracy for clarity: Aim to be understood, not exhaustive. - Practice out loud, badly: Record yourself. Get comfortable sounding human. - Use structure as a crutch: 3 points, 1 story, 1 takeaway. Less to overthink on stage. - Reframe the goal: You’re not there to prove you’re the smartest person. You’re there to transfer one useful idea. #publicspeakingcoach #communication #fyp #publicspeakingtraining #PublicspeakingcourseinKampala
