My dad was fighting as a US Marine on Saipan when this event occurred. The Marines landed on June 14 and still had not made it into the interior of the island. My dad told me one of the scariest moments of the battle was when the Marines looked out to the ocean at sunrise, and all the naval support ships had left. They thought they had been abandoned. But they came to learn that they had participated in the great Marianas turkey shoot.
