Was your handshape immediately corrected, or… did it take a little while? For weeks? For months? You’ve been signing something WRONG and someone nonchalantly points out to you, “oh… that handshape???” Like?? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? 😭
Point is if meaning is conveyed. Communication is still effective. Handshape is ONLY ONE PARAMETER of ASL phonology. It does not function independently. As long as you have a recognizable pattern, people will understand you.
Truthfully…this happened to me. I watched a video, which gave me some icks Go look!

I watched and saw my error. I signed JUST with the wrong handshape. When I signed JUST, it’s supposed to use the index, but somehow my hand kept making a “V” instead. My brain really was not syncing with my hand. I continued NOT correcting myself cause people still understood me. That doesn’t make it right. But what it does mean is that communication was NOT harmed.
Sometimes, there will be times to correct if it begins to change meaning, becoming confusing to understand. YES, let’s fix it. Even though I’m Deaf. Like my brain told my hand to sign something, and my hand was like “girl, nahhhhh.” That classic hand disconnect is real.
You’ve recorded yourself before and been like “why do my hands do that?” Like you knew what you wanted to say but your hands were refusing to connect, which is fascinating. Remember, language comes before accuracy. Accuracy comes with time. Fluency isn’t about perfection.
