It’s not an exit tax. It’s a tax on income you made in Canada. You can defer taxes on capital gains but you have to pay eventually. Just like it’s not a “death tax”, it’s a capital gains tax that has been deferred.

Sorry, Mario. The "deemed disposition" rule is the correct thing to do. After all, we wouldn't want someone to have a portfolio with millions (billions) in unrealized gains to up-stakes, leave for a zero-rate tax haven, realize all the gains there, then move back after a period of time? Just look at the uproar when a Bronfman trust moved to the US in 1991, and didn't pay the "exit tax".

In the late 80's Canada decided too many nurses so let many of us RN's go. USA recruited many of us crital care nurses. 1998 I left Vancouver and best thing I ever did.I am fine just visiting Canada.
