There’s also the B series and the C series for intermediate sizes. Envelopes are usually from those series, so they’ll be slightly bigger than the paper they’re meant to contain

Moving to Canada from Norway i had to just accept that paper here is stupid size. I mean "letter size". Except when it's "Legal size" which is even dumber.

1. That's the old definition, the modern is 1m is the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299792458 of a second 2. The official definition of the Inch is 1" = 2.54cm

Actually it is not correct the meter is described as the distance light travels in 1/(3*10^8) seconds (the second itself is defined as the time a fraction of radioactive isotope degrades, I forgot the details about that tbh)
