Canada uses 8.5" x 11" too. We call it "letter", and we call 8.5" x 14" "legal".

not to be that person, but the meter is currently defined as the path travelled by light in vacuum during 1/299792458th of a second

Still boggles my mind how the metric system still isn't used by the entire planet. Everything about it makes sense.

US just needs to be different in everything, yet almost nothing makes much sense

There’s also the B series and the C series for intermediate sizes. Envelopes are usually from those series, so they’ll be slightly bigger than the paper they’re meant to contain

Let's face it, we all know it would be the USA who doesn't agree on the system

Moving to Canada from Norway i had to just accept that paper here is stupid size. I mean "letter size". Except when it's "Legal size" which is even dumber.

A4 is elegant, but what's the point? keeping the same ratio doesn't really matter

If you thought the imperial paper size is bad, think about this ridiculous Fahrenheit unit 🤔😂

1. That's the old definition, the modern is 1m is the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299792458 of a second
2. The official definition of the Inch is 1" = 2.54cm

Zac267 :
Actually it is not correct the meter is described as the distance light travels in 1/(3*10^8) seconds (the second itself is defined as the time a fraction of radioactive isotope degrades, I forgot the details about that tbh)

well actually, one meter is the amount of distance that light travels in a vacuum over a time span of 1/299,792,458 seconds.
