Veteran actor Clifton Powell gives an absolutely powerful performance in the finale episode of the underrated 90s comedy-drama Roc. I originally posted a blurry camcorder version of this clip in the early days of the Styles Report but this scene is so compelling, when I saw a cleaner source was available I had to repost. Roc was a superbly acted and well written dramedy about a hard working Baltimore garbage collector and his family. The multi-talented Charles S. Dutton played the stingy but loving title character. He was surrounded by a tremendous supporting cast of accomplished stage actors: Ella Joyce, Rocky Carroll, and Carl Gordon. The show took advantage of this talent by airing it's entire second season live. The show started as a traditional sitcom but soon became increasingly serious as it tackled topics like social injustice, gang violence and the impact of drug abuse and sales on the community. Powell played the unapologetically ruthless drug dealer Andre, whose self-serving narcissism was in strict contrast to Roc's family and community values. As such, he became a major antagonist. Andre was eventually gunned down by Roc's friend, the gentle giant Calvin (a wonderfully subtle Heavy D); the dealer survives, but in a crippled state. Andre begins changing his ways and develops a begrudging respect for the "trashman"; in turn, Roc appeals to Andre to do something positive in life, so the latter can at least "reserve a cool spot in hell". This sets up this clip, in which a young gangbanger, who idolizes Andre, takes pride in his role in a drive-by murder; Powell addresses the boy with a sharp dose of reality and positively nails the balance of menace, vulnerablity, humanity, and remorse as he laments Andre's own role in perpetuating the cycle of violence. #thestylesreport #roc #cliftonpowell #itscliftonpowell #charlessdutton #ellajoyce #rockycarroll #carlgordon #dramedy #originalgangster
