@moments.in.time0: In 1689, Derry, also called Londonderry in many historical sources, was trapped inside its own walls. For 105 days, the city was under siege during the Williamite war in Ireland. The gates were shut, food ran down, disease spread, and thousands of civilians and defenders were crowded inside the walls waiting for relief that might never come. Outside the city, Jacobite forces controlled the surrounding ground. On the River Foyle, a heavy boom blocked ships from reaching the starving city. Inside, people watched the river, rationed what little food remained, and waited. The siege finally broke on July 28, 1689, when relief ships including the Mountjoy and Phoenix forced their way through the boom and reached the city. This was not just a battle. It was hunger, fear, politics, religion, survival, and ordinary people trapped in a place they could not leave.
