@millysrandomthoughts: Honestly where were these people to talk me out spending thousands on my degree if I was just gonna end up uneducated with no critical thinking skills??? #university #education #misinformation #criticalthinkingskills
I think the reason “I have a degree in this” annoys people is because some people basically use it to say their opinions on something could never be wrong if they have a degree, even though two people could do the same degree and still come out with some conflicting opinions, and knowledge is constantly changing. But yes, it is silly to say that having a degree in something doesn’t make you educated, even though as you point out that doesn’t make them infallible and you should make up your own mind

One man recently told me that I simply ‘wasn’t financially savvy’ when he was trying to explain that the 40% marginal tax rate is high so you should the amount you earn above the limit into pensions until it becomes ‘worth it’ to take it out - basically, when you earn £90k rather than £60k and I said that it made no sense to do that because the marginal rate is the same regardless. I’m literally training to be a chartered accountant and have a degree in economics but I’m ’not financially savvy’ because I couldn’t understand the point of this man’s financial system/advice?

I also want to preface this by saying the girl giving her take on muscle building was being interviewed on the street not making this video on her own so she wasn’t about to pull up studies like that to back up her point

a degree is not synonymous of knowing everything on the subject, fair. but it's also fair to say that having said degree will exponentially make you more knowledgeable on the subject. when you're at uni and have to do multiple essays you do a tremendous amount of research for your papers, you have access to data bases that you don't have anywhere else, unless you pay well for them (and let's face it, most people don't, so even if they go on a rabbit hole, it's still not the same articles you'd access at uni). obviously things change all the time and we have to keep up with new information, but having a degree still has value in itself. it doesn't speak on someone's intelligence but it does speak on their knowledge of something in specific

If you went to university you’re educated. Unless you quit. The rich are trying to devalue education.

I understand the logic of ignoring people who explicitly claim "I have a degree in x" rather than "I am a" - If this person is actually working in the field, they'd say that.
