This is the earliest known full-length portrait of an Englishwoman and it of course shows Margaret Beaufort, a born survivor and famously the mother to Henry VII. The painting was commissioned not long after Margaret’s death in 1509, and was created by Meynnart Wewyck, the same artist who worked on her tomb. The painting is packed with symbolism and information about Margaret and her life. She is shown in the rich surroundings of her own success, covered by golden tapestries displaying the Beaufort portcullis and the Tudor Rose as light streams in through decorative glass windows. Margaret’s personal piety is emphasised in the painting too - she is shown in the garb of a vowess (she became one after taking her vow of chastity despite her married state) and she is depicted kneeling in prayer. Her hands, adorned with precious rings, are clasped as she reads an open book of devotions. Margaret’s material success and deep faith are shown as harmonious components of her life here rather than at odds.
