It was the quarterfinals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Argentina faced England, a match already loaded with tension, just four years after the two countries had fought a war over the Falkland Islands. The stakes could not have been higher. In the 51st minute, a loose ball dropped inside the English penalty area. Maradona jumped alongside goalkeeper Peter Shilton and punched the ball into the net with his left hand. The referee, who had a poor angle, didn't see it. The goal was given. When asked about it after the match, Maradona famously said the goal was scored "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God", and the legend was born. What happened next made it even more extraordinary. Just four minutes later, Maradona received the ball in his own half and dribbled past five English players and the goalkeeper before slotting it into the net, a goal later voted the Goal of the Century. Two goals in the same game. One the most scandalous in history, the other the greatest ever scored. Argentina won 2-1, advanced to the semifinals, and went on to lift the World Cup trophy.
