You're focused on the intelligence. The intelligence is a variable. The system that trained it is the constant. David Robson's research, published in 2019, documented something that elite institutions have known and never publicized, the higher a person's measured cognitive ability, the more skilled they become at constructing justifications for beliefs they already hold. Intelligence doesn't make you more likely to be right. It makes you faster and more convincing at being wrong. Robson called this "earned dogmatism", the certainty that comes from success in systems that rewarded your particular way of thinking. Every credential, every institution, every hierarchy of expertise is partly a system for identifying people who think the right way and granting them increasing authority to define what "right thinking" means. The most dangerous participant in any knowledge system is not the ignorant person. It's the highly credentialed person whose intelligence has been bent, over decades of institutional reward, into the perfect instrument for defending the consensus that built them. This is why the people who change paradigms almost never come from the center of the field they're changing. Copernicus was a canon administrator. Darwin delayed publishing for twenty years. The Wright Brothers were bicycle mechanics. The institution is optimized to produce excellence within its current framework. It is structurally incompetent at producing the thought that replaces the framework. The smartest person in the room is often the last one to see what the room is doing….
