Starbucks is now closing 250 more stores in the US and Canada after a global boycott hurt its sales. On September 24, Starbucks announced it's closing about 250 stores, on top of 627 last year, saying they weren't making enough money and never mentioning the boycott. The boycott started in October 2023, when Starbucks' baristas union posted support for Palestine and Starbucks sued it over its name and logo. The boycott spread across the Middle East and the US. In January 2024, Starbucks said it hurt US sales, and its Middle East operator cut about 2,000 jobs. The announcement doesn't explain why these stores weren't making enough money or whether the boycott damage recovered, so we think the boycott is a big part of it. Starbucks has also fought its workers for years. In 2008, a labor judge ruled it illegally fired three New York baristas for union organizing. Over 700 stores have unionized since 2021, still with no contract. A 2023 Senate report found Starbucks faced more labor cases than any other private employer, and judges ruled it broke the law in most of over 100 cases. Baristas also launched a boycott on August 25 demanding a contract. And somehow, a Brazilian farm reportedly kept Starbucks' ethical sourcing certification after 20 workers were rescued there from slavery-like conditions. Starbucks calls its coffee ethically sourced and is loved by millions, but few people know what it actually does. Some more ethical alternatives to Starbucks are Counter Culture Coffee, Dean's Beans, Onyx Coffee Lab and Equal Exchange.
