@highsocietymama: Parenting isn’t about hiding reality… it’s about teaching kids how to face it. Here’s why I don’t shield my son from Burning Man (or other possibly questionable life experiences) Parents worry about what kids might see at Burning Man. I see it as an opportunity to teach. Parent raise concern: “What if my kid sees me smoke a j*int or eat a gummy?” This shouldn’t be a concern because honesty and trust are the foundation of relationships. Why can’t you be honest with your kid about your actions? What do you gain by sheltering them? There is a rise in the realm of parenting that involves sheltering kids to “protect them,” but I believe it is actually hurting them. Reality is that humans are going to witness challenging situations. I take every opportunity to explain the reality of the world to my son in a way that he can see it as a challenge to be overcome… We discuss the possible ways to overcome a challenge. We talk through how to improve the situation that caused it. We discuss the issues or dangers around it. EXPERIENCING life paired with communicating the dangers, benefits, possibilities, and challenges that a situation presents is part of the learning curve of life. The sooner a small human can begin to strategically evaluate a situation on their own, the better they can learn to navigate their decisions around it. Most of the shame and criticism of others comes from our own insecurities. It comes with the awareness of what we don’t know and why we fear something, to be courageous enough to explore this with your kid and not pass on your own fears to them through overprotection. Comment “tools” and I will send you my tools for overcoming shame and confidently choosing a more present/connected mom life.
