If you wait for a lip curl or a growl, you’ve most likely already missed a few other ways your dog is probably saying “no thanks”. We teach our kids to identify the body language that happens *before* it even needs to escalate to a growl to keep everyone safe. Popcorns no is pretty clear in this video. Eve had been sitting there for a solid 5 minutes stroking his ear — we had long blinks, calm body language, and Eve was respecting his space. It was sweet — you can imagine how soft those ears are! Then when she bends down to get her face closer to his, he pulls away, averts his gaze, we see a little whale eye, his body gets stiff…. These are all very clear signs of a “no thank you”. If I hadn’t stepped in, he likely would have gotten up and walked away — our kids aren’t allowed to follow when a dog excuses themself from an interaction. About 4.5 million dog bites are reported per year in the US — that’s 1 in every 73 people. And children under 5 are at the highest risk. Monitoring our kids interactions with dogs, helping them identify when a dog is uncomfortable, and having rules and boundaries with your kids/dogs are a few ways you can keep EVERYONE safe. Sometimes you’ll hear people say “the dog bit out of nowhere,” when often times our dogs show us these subtle signs that we just weren’t raised to notice. Your kids learning to notice them starts with YOU 🤍
