@soot_n_sewer: Last night I was up late, finally got to bed, and at 3:00 AM the phone rings. Blocked drain. Fair enough—that’s what on-call service is for. I explain the after-hours rate, and suddenly the emergency isn’t so urgent anymore. I didn’t even make it out the door. As a business owner, this is the stuff that makes you question whether offering 24/7 service is even worth it. You sacrifice sleep, family time, and your own health just to be available, only to get price shopped at three in the morning. I’m genuinely curious. Business owners and tradesmen: Is offering on-call service still worth it, or have you thought about getting rid of it altogether? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments. #afterhours #emergencyservices #plumber #tradesmen #bluecollar

20 year service plumber. I refuse to work for a company that does 24/7 on call.
Its not worth it at all for the tech.
We have lives and families as well. If your company cant make it without 24/7 on call then you need to refigure your business.

not a little bit extra a lot a bit extra. in my experience, the average sewer call during a normal part of the day is about 500 bucks. If it's after 9:00 in the evening and before the business opens at 6:00, you're on triple Time.

I would never do a drain clearing for a tenant. Id make sure by calling the landlord. If he hasn't okd it, you most likely aren't getting paid. I am also self employed and sold all my drain cleaning equipment. Much happier.

here's a tip, turn your ringer off, don't answer after you go to bed, I have 26yrs in business, I would never go out at 3am, why, wait for 4hrs get there at 7am, it will mess up your whole day, stress is bad

Have owned a plumbing business for 26 yrs. No nights or weekends. I value my plumbers more than I do money.

I’ve been there. People shocked by extra fees for OT work. Get an answering service. They only need to tell people one thing: 2x rates between 6pm & 6am - minimum $500 service call. That will filter out 95% of the calls and the few calls you end up doing will more than pay for the answering service and your trouble. The rest of the time - you sleep.

My boss woke me up out of bed for his friends house, "water everywhere, leak". I drove an hour to the call, and it was a toilet flapper.. at midnight. Of course they want you back in at 6am on time or you're a bad employee.

Same with weekends. Esp Saturday. People think they shouldn’t have to pay extra. Blows my mind

Why wouldn’t tenant inform the landlord first?

it caused a lot of anxiety, affected my mental health. I couldnt sleep the days I was on-call because I was afraid I would miss the call and get fired.

We do oncall but we charge. Also get a credit card on file. We charge the it service charge plus our fee. Most of the time people wait till next day unless it’s truly an emergency

$500/hr for after hour calls. See how much it’s an emergency.

being on call as a service plumber is the worst part of the job. most companies don't properly compensate their employees.

So I’m a little understaffed, But I do two nights of on call in a row. Coz my employees don’t want any additional work although we have been slow. I made 1900.00 that they would have made on those two nights on call. I don’t get it. Doctors are on call, water authorities, city workers etc. After 28 years still part of the job.

I’ve been there many times. We’re considering having AI answer the phones after 10 PM till seven in the morning so it can let the customer know what the service call charge to show up will be that should eliminate a lot of the calls before they even ring to my phone

I worked for companies doing 24/7 365 days a year for over 20 years, my kids are grown now. I started my own business 4 years ago, my phone goes on do not disturb at 4:30 until 7:30 the next business day. I'm not ever doing on call again, I have many customers that'll use another company for weekend emergencies but will call me when they need me during business hours.

im running a small service company. unless the call is because of our mistake we don't take after hours calls anymore. it's very rare that anyone has an actual emergency that can't wait until morning
