@various.archives: In 2009, a 27-year-old Georgian designer named Demna Gvasalia presented a small collection at the Flanders Fashion Institute showroom in Antwerp. He had graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts three years earlier. He had worked with Walter van Beirendonck. He had no brand. No name recognition. No social media presence. No one outside a small circle in Antwerp knew who he was. In this interview, one of the earliest known recordings of Gvasalia, he describes working in a constructed, architectural way with clothes for the first time. He says something new is always exciting and fun. And then he says something that, in hindsight, reads like a manifesto. His plan for the future is to avoid the commercial aspect. Five years later, he would found Vetements in a small Paris apartment with his brother Guram. Six years later, he would be named creative director of Balenciaga. He would go on to redefine the silhouette of the 2010s, turn irony into a design language, and become one of the most debated figures in fashion.
