Before we even came into this world, our souls were already created and took a pledge with Allah — that’s the state before dunya. - Quran says: - “And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants, and made them testify concerning themselves: ‘Am I not your Lord?’ They said: ‘Yes, we testify.’” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:172) - So before dunya existed for us, we already acknowledged Allah as our Lord. Then this world is just a temporary stop — not our beginning, and definitely not our end. - Then comes the reality of dunya itself, as we said before: - The Prophet ﷺ said: “This world is a prison for the believer, and a paradise for the disbeliever.” (Sahih Muslim) - Quran evidence: For the disbeliever: - “The life of this world is made attractive to those who disbelieve — they enjoy it for a little while, then they have no help.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:212) - For the believer: - “The life of this world is nothing but amusement and play. The real home is the Hereafter — if only they knew.” (Surah Al-Ankabut 29:64) - Simple full picture: We existed before dunya and promised to worship Allah. Then we’re sent here to be tested. For the believer, it feels like a “prison” because we hold back from wrong and keep our promise. For the one who turns away, it feels like paradise because they follow every desire — but it’s all short-lived. After dunya comes the real, eternal life.
