This unique style of racing takes place in Diejiao, Foshan, in southern China’s Guangdong Province. Teams race through narrow village canals packed with sharp bends, using a technique known as “dragon boat drifting” to navigate the tight corners at speed. The tradition dates back more than 500 years to the Ming Dynasty. 🌊 Diejiao is just one of many regional styles of dragon boat racing found across China. From sea dragon boat races along the coast, to flag-snatching races in Fujian, to traditional river sprints and even dragon boat tug-of-war events, each region has developed its own local variation over centuries. 📜 The festival is traditionally linked to Qu Yuan, a poet and statesman who lived more than 2,000 years ago. Legend says that after he drowned in a river, local people raced out in boats to search for him and threw rice into the water as an offering.
