@keepherwildus: one of the best horsemen in wild west was a black seminole woman 🐎 meet johanna july. born around 1860 into a black seminole settlement in mexico, founded by people who'd fled slavery in florida, she later settled in the texas borderlands near eagle pass. back then horse training meant force and submission. johanna found a softer way instead, leading a wild horse straight into the rio grande and swimming alongside it. just the two of them, vulnerable, and carried by the same water. by the time they reached shore, they were partners. she took over her family's horse training work when her father died and became known throughout the borderlands for her way with horses. we almost lost her story completely, the only record we have of her is a 1937 government interview. history left a lot of teachers out of the textbook. let's not make the same mistake. black voices are still underrepresented in the equestrian world. in honor of juneteenth, go follow these accounts and learn from some living legacies: @nanakakyiri @Compton Cowboys @The Concrete Cowgirl @CowgirlSolana Who are we missing? 1860! The same year Annie Oakley was born! I wonder if they ever crossed paths. It would be super cool one day if there’s ever a movie made about Annie & they included Johanna & her training somehow.

Because when you build trust with an animal that is driven by the desire run away from us, you’ll build the strongest bond you’ll ever have and that horse will do pretty much anything for you because you’ve built that level of trust. The horse knows that you’re not going to put it in danger or harms way and sort it trust when you ask it to do something, a horse trained on fear, will run the moment you hit the ground ( if you are thrown ) after a scary interaction.
