Etymology nerd has already explicitly justified racism. After the Epstein files came out and it was revealed Epstein called non Jews “goyim”, he made a video defending the use of that word. He said it’s not a slur even though it refers to a racial outgroup.

You’re trying to change his role from research to activism, and you’re saying that he’s bad because he’s not already fulfilling the role of activist you decided to cast him into. You are doing the same thing you’re criticizing.

explaining does equal justifying IF YOU HAVE A PLATFORM. It's called the bandwagon fallacy

explaining something is not just justifying something. he explains why things happen and the language history. he does not take stances on whether they are right or wrong.

basically its totally valid, important even, to engage with the more problematic areas of your study, but when youre a communicator too you really have to spell out that your are explicitly not justifying or normalizing the problematic aspects, or in his case, kind of accidentally fall into your own deterministic trap like you said I guess?

I think this accusation requires a few things. 1) EtymologyNerd has methods to counteract the trend that he withheld. 2) that linguistics (especially contrarian subgroups) would respond to such efforts. 3) such efforts could be relayed and empower members of his audience.

applied anthropology coming in clutch here: working in the field affects what you're studying. Every anthropologist knows this, and should account for it.

to me he seems like he's been caught in the "lack of tone means bad tone" trap that I've seen with a few other creators. He always talks objectively (at least that's what I've seen) and people interpret that as being condoning

Great video and good take. For the people saying “explaining isn’t the same as justifying” clearly didn’t watch and understand this video
