@dailymathvisuals: Perimeter and area are the two things kids always mix up. Here's the simplest way to tell them apart. Perimeter is the distance AROUND. Walk along every edge and add the lengths up. For a 4 by 3 rectangle, that's 4 plus 3 plus 4 plus 3, which is 14. Area is the space INSIDE. Fill it with one-by-one squares and count them. 4 times 3 is 12. The memory trick is in the names. PERI-METER has the word METER in it, so it's a LENGTH. AREA is just the inside surface. Picture a fenced yard. The fence is the perimeter. The grass is the area. And here's the wild part — two shapes can have the same perimeter but totally different areas. A 4 by 4 square has perimeter 16 and area 16. A 7 by 1 rectangle ALSO has perimeter 16, but its area drops to just 7. Same fence, less than half the grass.
