Buddy of mine was hired by Nvidia back in 2020. He was an IC3 I believe and got about 120k worth of RSU. He still works there and never cashed anything in. It’s worth about 4 million today…

So if I get shares it's taxed as income but if the CEO gets shares it isn't?

Also, once you get laid off they keep the ones that have not been vested

wait so you potentially stand to lose more “cash” (higher taxes) bc of stocks that aren’t even liquid? wild if I understand that right

Really wish I would’ve known this at first. Paying the tax and then immediately having the shares decline is a gut punch. Now I sell immediately and diversify. (Obviously my company’s stock isn’t 📈)

thats why nvidia 76-78% of nvidia employees are millionaires , because of these restricted stock units included in employee contracts

And if you get laid off they snatch every single one of those unvested RSUs back and you’re left with nothing. BEWARE.😞

Yep our w2 would make people think we are super well off but so much of that is vesting stocks we gotta pay mad taxes on that we won’t really see the money on till retirement. That tax bill each year SUCKS!

So when you leave a company , isn’t the first year total comp much lower than the stated amount? How does it work our overall for 4 years if year 1 skips rsu and bonus

I worked at AWS (Amazon) for just over a year. Their vesting schedule is also four years, but they are back loaded, meaning you get almost nothing in years one and two, then you get a lot in years three and four. To compensate for virtually no stock in the first couple years, they give you massive sign on bonuses. My sign on bonus in the first year at Amazon was almost my total salary at my prior company. They compensate you VERY well (at least in tech), but they get their money’s worth. There’s zero work-life balance unless you set hard boundaries. If you don’t, expect people to be messaging you at all hours of the day since they have employees all over the world.

Christopher :
The cliff is the end of the fourth year when your total comp drops and falls off a “cliff” not the first year before they vest
