The scroll would be rolled up from both end with wooden rollers with handles. There are no chapters, verses, capitals, or punctuation. If you wanted to go to a certain "verse", you had to be familiar enough with the text to wind it to the place you are looking for. That is what is so amazing when the Bible says that Jesus "found the place where it was written" and read Isaiah 61:1-2.
