All that glisters is not gold, and not all sparkle is valued equally across cultures. I often think about how important texture is in Chinese aesthetics. From bronzes to 玉, from carved lacquer to damask silks, beauty was often found not in optical perfection but in the character of the material itself. Even into the last century, many Chinese gemstones were still cut as freeform cabochons rather than heavily faceted to maximise brilliance. It is tempting to reduce this to a lack of technical ability, but I suspect it was more often a deliberate aesthetic choice. What fascinates me is that Chinese culture places enormous emphasis on symmetry, yet traditional Chinese jewellers were often willing to forgo perfect symmetry in the stone itself. Indian lapidary traditions often sought symmetry while retaining as much of the original stone as possible. Western lapidary traditions increasingly developed towards faceting, using geometry and light to maximise brilliance. Chinese jewellers seem to have taken yet another path: retaining the original character of the stone as much as possible, even at the expense of symmetry or sparkle. It is a fascinating tension. A constant balancing act between competing priorities. Again and again, I find myself returning to the idea that stones were understood as products of nature, and that the role of the craftsman was not simply to perfect them, but to reveal what was already there. The inclusion becomes a landscape. The irregularity becomes character. The material is not corrected. It is interpreted. Perhaps that is why this aesthetic continues to inspire me. It is not about chasing beauty. It is about finding it. #hanfugirl #hfgatelier #gemstone #chineseaesthetics
