ACUTE LOW BACK MUSCLE STRAIN: a step-by-step checklist for the first 3 days after injury: 1. Find your position of comfort : Usually supine with hips and knees elevated to 90 degrees is the most tolerable. But if this doesn’t feel good on you, explore other positions that feel the best. When your back is really hurting, go to this position to calm it down with deep breathing 2. Short, frequent bouts of pain-tolerant movement : There will likely be discomfort when you move, but the movements you choose should not increase your pain to an intolerable level. Frequency of movement is more important than intensity. Aim for 5-10 minutes of gentle movement every 1-2 hours 3. Pain management: -Heat : go for it, it should help de-stiffen your muscles temporarily so you can perform the movements with a bit more comfort. Hot showers work the best for me -Ice : ok to do but in smaller doses than heat. Prolonged cold exposure can delay the healing process but fine to use in short spurts of 5-10 minutes if pain is increasing -NSAIDs : same rule as ice, small dosage as needed. I don’t recommend popping a pill all day, only when you absolutely need it. Personally, I take two NSAIDs before bed to help me sleep 4. Don’t freak out : It sucks. Trust me I know, I’m in pain as I type out this caption. Be mad, be frustrated, but catch yourself from going off the deep end with anxiety around the pain. Pain does not equal damage, yes there is some mild damage to the low back but just because you’re in a lot of pain does not mean you’ve broken yourself and will never come back. Obviously you do want to monitor symptoms past the first 3 days in case it does get worse and you need to get it checked out. Trust your gut with that. But low back muscle strains generally have a very good prognosis for full healing. Anyone else strained their back? What tips would you have for someone in the first 3 days? #physicaltherapy #physicaltherapist #physio #physiotherapy #physicaltherapyworks #PTworks #physicaltherapyhumor #Fitness #fitnesstips #strength #fitnesshumor #gymhumor #lowback #lowbackstrain #lowbackpain #lowbackpainrelief #lowbackmusclestrain
