Because sometimes closure isn’t another three-hour conversation where you explain your feelings for the seventeenth time and hope that this combination of words finally makes somebody understand what losing you would mean. Sometimes closure is watching what they do when they actually have the opportunity to lose you. You stop chasing. You stop fixing every disagreement. You stop being the first person to reach out after every period of silence. And then you realize… they’re letting you go. That’s a devastating realization when you’ve spent so long believing that underneath all the problems, surely this person would fight for you when it really mattered. You imagined the moment where everything became real and they finally said, “No. I don’t want to lose this. Let’s figure it out.” Instead, there’s silence. And suddenly you’re staring at your phone thinking, Wait. You’re actually okay with this? Of course, someone not chasing you after a breakup doesn’t automatically mean they never loved you. Sometimes respecting someone’s decision is love. Sometimes both people know the relationship has become unhealthy. Sometimes someone desperately wants to reach out but understands that another conversation would only restart a cycle that needs to end. And we shouldn’t create breakup tests where we leave specifically to see whether somebody will come running after us. But if you’ve clearly communicated that you’re hurting, repeatedly asked for reasonable changes, tried to repair things, and someone consistently chooses behaviors they know are costing them the relationship, eventually their choices become information. You shouldn’t have to threaten your absence to make your presence valuable. There’s a difference between somebody saying they don’t want to lose you and somebody behaving like keeping you matters. And maybe that’s the closure you were searching for all along. Not the perfect explanation. Not one final apology. Not getting them to admit exactly how badly they hurt you. Just accepting what their actions have been telling you. Sometimes you spend months asking, “How could you let me walk away?” before realizing that’s the wrong question. The better question is, “Why am I still trying to convince someone that losing me should matter?” And once you genuinely understand that, the silence starts feeling less like waiting for them to come back and more like finally allowing yourself to move forward.
