Adjusting the valves? Man, what engine are you working on? The last time I did that was in the 00s when I was working on a fiat 125p, and once after I bought my 95 pre facelift kawasaki ZX6R. Basically, any other vehicle Ive worked on in the last 20 years has had hydraulic lifters.

Being that the dial indicator is next level accurate, once you tension the locknut does the measurement ever so slightly change? Always been curious as I’ve always done it with feeler gauges

A 10th of a millimetre? Are you sure that’s only 0.004”

this is a great way to adjust valve lash, especially on older high mileage engines. It's important that the stroke of the dial indicator is inline with the movement, particularly when using a regular magnetic base type.

Brian white, he of hot wire fuel injection, twin turbo Porsche in the 80s, showed me that in with the tappet closed and then he turned it out by a certain amount on a template he made. 10 seconds a tappet. perfect every time. he was an engineer.

hm clever idea, although my engines are easy to do it on but then again just tractors from 1970 and diesel engines, might try it on my honda tho with just a dial gauge and a magnetic base as got that

Been doing that for years. You don’t need a special dial gauge. Just use a standard gauge with magnetic base. Don’t use digital. The one day you need it the battery will be flat or the display goes
