My friend took my kid in. Not me, I slept in my car. My son was with my friend. She set boundaries so I didn’t fail. Best outcome. She was right I worked hard to move forward. Got a place for both of us.

Just a thought as a single mother who has been in a less stable environment in my younger years. I would say the getting locked out of the house has nothing to do with losing or forgetting her keys, and more to do with being late on rent and getting locked out by the landlord. Which is why she can’t get them to give her a key. Me personally I would have rented a room for the night or stayed with a friend before I ever begged to stay with family. I was too prideful to tell them I was in that position not because they would not have helped me but because I was ashamed.

as the older sibling, I applaud big brother for being brutally honest. as the one whose life was a mess once upon a time, sometimes it helps to be informed in stark detail how your situation is perceived by others, and how your instability affects those you are leaning on. the initial embarrassment becomes a catalyst. perhaps that conversation will encourage little sis to get a grip on her life, not only for her kids but for her own self esteem.
