However, Kusayla preferred to emerge and meet the Muslims in an open area called Wadi Mams, near Kairouan, to ensure the freedom of movement of his cavalry and to avoid besieging the city. There, in the year 69 AH, the two armies met in a fierce and brutal battle in which both sides fought with unprecedented ferocity, and rivers of blood flowed. The tide nearly turned, but for the Muslims' fierce strength and determination. Ultimately, this resulted in the defeat of the alliance and the death of the Berber commander, Kusayla, which led to This led to the collapse of his army’s vision, their dispersal, and the flight of those who remained, enabling Zuhair to enter and secure Kairouan. However, he refrained from staying there, driven by greed for leadership or stability, and decided to return with his army towards Barqa in Libya. During his return journey, near the coast in the region of Derna, Byzantine (Roman) warships took advantage of the absence of the main army and carried out a surprise amphibious landing to raid the Muslims and plunder the region. Commander Zuhair bin Qais al-Balawi had no choice but to engage them in a surprise and unequal confrontation with a small number of his companions. He fought with great heroism until he fell as a martyr in that arena, defending the borders of the Muslims, thus ending his life full of jihad.
