I think Clarkson is a brilliant tv creator, Top Gear was the same, they have a structure with scripted events, however, they are allowed to react and take the scripted scenario in whatever direction feels right. All about personal chemistry

I think some people use the word scripted when they actually mean a set up. The people in the show aren’t given lines to read but are told to do certain things or put in situations deliberately by the producers that they wouldn’t naturally be in.

You can see the genuinely scripted bits like when Clarkson and Caleb ‘discover’ Lisa’s new sheep because their acting is terrible and it’s so much obvious they know what’s going on

I remember Jeremy talking about this in an interview regarding Top Gears “scripted” or “set up” nature of the specials. And he basically said, well yeah we have to plan it a little bit, because we can’t fly a whole production crew to Bolivia and drive around in the hopes that something good happens. 🤣
