This is literally just capitalism. Ever company that reaches a certain size starts to experience slowing growth (oh dear). When that happens the company tries to increase bottom line by pinching workers and offering dry promotions. Then morale goes to zero and the pizza parties start. Next an expensive consultant will be brought in to do surveys and adjust culture (which really means giving every job and work experience a new name and label while executive compensation continues to go up.
