@dr.matthew.parker: The jump from resident to attending can be a scary one. For my residency, we were patient capped at 8 per day—this means that, despite how busy the service got, we could not see more than 8 patients. When I became an attending on an inpatient unit, I saw 23 patients a day. I did not have residents, I did not have help. More responsibility, more paperwork, more stress. It’s often said that you need 3-4 years of being an attending to feel comfortable practicing, and I would agree. What surprised me is the change that occurs, both from medical school to residency, and from residency to attending. One day, you feel like you are drowning and can never possibly make it work; the next, it all seems manageable. It comes...with time. #MentalHealth #psychiatry #MentalHealthAwareness #anxiety #residency

Current psych resident here, that cap is crazy low. I just finished my intern year as the sole resident on 13 bed inpatient units.

The jump between your patient loads is shocking but I have to say I love getting my care at a teaching school because the residents take so much time to learn and care for their patients and I like being part of that process
