@alaskandippedinaloha: As a memoir writer, I understand something many people forget: The most important chapters are often unrecognizable while we’re living them. We rarely know the ending while the story is still unfolding. We only realize later that the story changed long before the ending arrived. Maybe that’s why the horses at South Point move me so deeply. The colt didn’t wake up one morning trusting me. Trust arrived through small moments. One visit. Then another. Then another. A quiet accumulation of ordinary encounters that seemed insignificant while they were happening. Until one day I realized I was no longer standing in the same story. The distance had changed. The fear had softened. The relationship had become something different. Perhaps healing works the same way. Not in dramatic revelations. Not in grand declarations. But through small choices repeated over time. One boundary. One act of self-respect. One moment of courage. One day of choosing peace. Then another. Then another. Until one day we look around and realize we are no longer standing where we once stood. And perhaps the woman standing on lava rock in Miloliʻi, watching the ocean meet the horizon, is already living inside a chapter she has not yet learned the title of. Not because the ending is known. But because possibility has returned. And possibility is often the first sign that a new chapter has already begun.
