@project_footballer: “Speed can lower your football IQ” This is what Thierry Henry explained to Rio Ferdinand on @rioferdinandpresents recently. He explained that he was reliant on speed and it actually stopped him from using his mind and it was only when a French coach banned him from using speed in a training session that he realised how he was underdeveloped in so many other areas of the game. I love this as a lesson for coaches, players and parents. Speed is a great asset, but practice beating players in other ways so you don’t just depend on it. Amazing insight from one of the greatest players of all time.

Johan Cruyff told Dennis Bergkamp the same thing. As a youngster, he was a right winger and did nothing but run, so he move him into midfield. Then nature would take care of the rest by itself, helping him develop the feeling for receiving the ball, passing, and controlling it. Later, he could use his speed and became one of the greats.

for me it's not being a physical player. I had to find a way to compete with players because all of them were way to physical for me so I had to adapt.
