@drsuzannesimpson: Teen won't talk to you? The problem is often the question you're leading with. "What's wrong" sounds caring. But to a teenager who is already struggling, it lands differently. It's a diagnostic question. It positions you as the investigator and them as the problem. Before they've said a single word, they're already being asked to explain and justify themselves. That's not an invitation. That's a summons. What I've learned from teenagers directly is that they don't open up when they feel interrogated. They open up when they feel like they're in control of what they share and when they share it. So how about trading two words. Instead of "what's wrong" — get eye to eye and ask "what's going on?" It's casual. It's open. It doesn't assume something is broken. It puts them in the driver's seat at exactly the moment they feel like everything is out of their control. That one shift is the difference between a door closing and a door staying open. 👉 Comment GUIDE and I'll send you my free guide, 8 Ways to Get on Your Kids' Turf. #drsuzannesimpson #getontheirturf #parentingteens #teenmentalhealth #raisingteens

My cousin was upset and I knew she was bc she seemed a bit pissy, we where at the pool and she wanted to learn to swim by herself but she’s only 5 and couldn’t reach the floor so he had flooties, she finally cried and told us she wasn’t able to swim right, it had only been a few hours and told her it takes time to learn and doesn’t need to get it right away

What would you suggest the “second” question is? - The answer to ‘what is going on?’ Is usually’nothing.’ Where do we go from there? 🥺
