With the news that Kukai is planning to open a full-service restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, I felt like it was time for a revisit! I know nothing other than the fact that it will be located on Grant, where Dante’s Fire (RIP) used to be. I have yet to investigate the details, so in the meantime, enjoy this quick review. For company, I took my youngest brother, who was craving Yamato. (Yamato is closed for fall break through October 14). From there, we pivoted to another favorite Japanese spot of mine, and he was impressed! What We Ordered: Katsu Curry $17
Kukai makes the best curry in town! Since my brother has been to Japan, I knew he would appreciate the curry’s consistency, hearty vegetables and, of course, the perfectly crispy tonkatsu cutlet. It’s served over rice and remains one of my favorite things to order here. Gyu Onigiri $4.50
This is probably in my top three things to order from Kukai! I love the slightly sweet beef in this onigiri. The rice-to-meat ratio is solid, and I appreciate that it’s made to order. I picked this one out for my brother. Korokke Curry $16.50
Since I’m taking a break from red meat but was craving Kukai’s curry, I tried the korokke curry for the first time. Korokke is essentially a potato croquette with a creamy mashed-potato interior and crispy panko exterior. I had my fill of these at the Omicho Market in Kanazawa, but you can find them anywhere. Even Family Mart. I was both surprised and delighted to see that it came with two potato croquettes, so I shared one with Alex and my brother. Spicy Tuna Handroll $7
Wanting something fresh to pair with my curry entrée, this seemed like a great option. The tuna could have been a little spicier, but I would order it again. Honorable Mention:
Alex loves smash burgers, so he ordered a burger with caramelized onions from Bo’s Burgers, another concept from the same owners as Kukai. I hope you enjoyed this spontaneous review featuring some quickly snapped food photos and my equally spontaneous thoughts!
