@mach.v1: For more than three decades, the iconic Boeing 747-200-based VC-25A aircraft have carried U.S. presidents around the world, serving not just as transport but as a flying command centre capable of operating during global crises. This week marks the beginning of the end for these legendary jets, which first entered service in 1990 and have become one of the most recognisable aircraft in aviation history. Ageing airframes, rising maintenance demands and increasingly outdated systems have finally pushed the fleet toward retirement after 36 years of service. Their replacement is the Boeing 747-8-based VC-25B, the most advanced presidential aircraft ever built. Packed with upgraded communications, security systems and defensive capabilities, the new aircraft will eventually take over Air Force One duties, although years of delays have pushed full service entry back to around 2028. In the meantime, a specially modified Boeing 747-8 “Bridge” aircraft is entering service this summer to support the ageing fleet.
