Juneteenth was not the actual final legal end date of slavery throughout the United States.
What Juneteenth commemorates is a specific historical event: on June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced that enslaved people in Texas were free under the Emancipation Proclamation. Texas was one of the last Confederate states where emancipation was enforced by Union troops.
A few important dates:
January 1, 1863 – The Emancipation Proclamation took effect, but only in Confederate-held areas and depended on Union military enforcement.
June 19, 1865 (Juneteenth) – News and enforcement of freedom reached many enslaved people in Texas.
December 6, 1865 – The Ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment formally abolished slavery nationwide (except as punishment for a crime, as specified in the amendment).
Some enslaved people in border states and certain territories were not freed solely by the Emancipation Proclamation and became legally free through later actions, including the Thirteenth Amendment.
