The Ride To The Sun I don’t know where to start. How do you describe the handiwork of a God who cares about every detail? We did not get to the top; it was still closed, but we managed to ride nearly 40 miles. Then we did another 11-mile bike ride on the other side of the park. Tonight is pizza night…lol….carb load. The ride was not as hard as we thought. We’re used to riding mountain bikes up rocks and steep grades, so The Ride To The Sun was not that grueling. It was 2700 feet of climbing, but the scenery kept it interesting with lots of stops for pictures. We ran into (not literally) three women from Georgia and had the nicest conversation. When you ride like that, you have something in common with those willing to take the same risk. A lot of people ride E-bikes, and we think that’s great. We prefer old-fashioned human power; to do less would make us cranky. At the closed gate, we were talking with this couple from Colorado. We were filling them in on all that Montana has to offer. They asked us where we used to live in Oregon. We told them, and they said they lived there from 2000 to 2008. I asked if they used to watch the news, and they both got quiet. They looked at me funny, I took off my hat and sunglasses and said do you remember Rick Dancer? They went nuts. It was so much fun. This is what we want to do with the rest of our lives, or at least as long as we can stay healthy. Kathy and I want to find the simple stories of survival, of people who take risks, and who still have hope. A friend, Tom, from our gym in Helena, told us he was camping at Fish Creek starting tonight. We finished our second ride, climbed in the car, and went in search of Tom’s campsite. He was happy to see us as we were to see him. Life is about living around others. Life is about talking to strangers until they are no longer strange. It’s about finding new places, good food, warm conversations, and doing it all in the biggest and largest church ever built by our creator. Nature is where He lives. It’s where he connects us and shows off His artistic ability. He sprinkles our lives with people, just to make life more interesting. It would be a shame not to venture out. Perhaps it’s time to become the American Nomads. More to come.
