We found a stray cat with weak and injured back legs and brought her to the vet. Here are the test results in simple terms. ① Complete Blood Count (CBC) • Her neutrophils are higher than normal. This usually means there's ongoing inflammation somewhere in her body. • Her hemoglobin is low. Hemoglobin carries oxygen through the body, so low levels can make her feel weak and tired because her tissues aren't getting enough oxygen. • Her hematocrit is also low. This confirms that she's anemic. It's currently 22.3%. If it drops below 18%, a blood transfusion may be needed. • Her hemoglobin concentration is slightly high. This usually suggests mild dehydration. ② Blood Chemistry • Her globulin is elevated, and her albumin-to-globulin ratio is much lower than normal. This is consistent with long-term inflammation and ongoing immune system activity, which can happen with chronic kidney disease. • AST is mildly elevated. ALT is still within the normal range, although on the higher side. Since CK is also elevated, the AST increase is most likely coming from muscle damage rather than the liver. • Amylase is elevated. This may be because her kidneys aren't clearing it as efficiently, along with the effects of physical stress. • Creatine kinase (CK) is about three times higher than normal. CK is released when muscle cells are damaged, which explains why her back legs are so weak. • Her kidney values are still within the normal range. This suggests she may be in Stage 2 chronic kidney disease, where the kidneys are still able to compensate. ③ Ultrasound • Both kidneys show widespread structural changes. The kidney tissue appears brighter than normal, and the normal pattern inside the kidneys is disrupted. These findings are consistent with chronic kidney disease, including long-term damage, scarring, and inflammation. • The gallbladder wall is thickened. This suggests inflammation of the gallbladder. Initial Assessment The vet strongly suspects Stage 2 chronic kidney disease. As the kidneys become scarred over time, they produce less erythropoietin (EPO), which can lead to anemia and low energy. Long-term anemia means less oxygen reaches the muscles, which may explain the muscle damage and the high CK level, making her back legs much weaker. Ongoing kidney disease can also keep the immune system activated, leading to higher globulin levels, a lower A/G ratio, and mild stress-related changes in her liver enzymes. Recommended Next Steps The vet recommends a urinalysis, a UPC (urine protein-to-creatinine ratio), and an SDMA test to better evaluate her kidney function. Long-Term Care She'll need kidney-support supplements, plenty of water and hydration, and a prescription kidney diet. Because chronic kidney disease can't be reversed, she'll also need regular follow-up blood work, chemistry panels, and repeat UPC testing to monitor her condition. #savecats #PetRescue #TikTokAnimals #rescuecat #abandonedcat
