@astro_geets: When I first started my degree in astrophysics I was surprised at the amount of coding required. There is nobody I know who doesn’t code. It’s all in Python which is a very easy language to use and I am by no means complaining!! I like to code and find it to be really fun and a good way to exercise my brain. Just thought I’d use my platform to talk about what astronomy work actually entails! #Astronomy #astrophysics #physics #fyp #academia
I hate coding but I really want to be an Astrophysicist 😭

Does anyone know a STEM degree that relates to engineering, maths, physics, ect. and isn’t INSANELY coding heavy? Like a bit is fine BUT EVERYDAY?

this makes astrophysics way more appealing to me actually, I'm a rising senior and need to decide what major I'll apply to colleges with, and now I will look a lot more into astrophysics

counter point. Astrophysics is only 79% coding, 10% navigating bureaucracy, 5% looking at images and graphs to make sure your code worked correctly, 5% writing proposals, papers, posters, and talks, and 1% attending meetings where you get to spend evenings hanging out with friends while trying to stay under the per diem limits. (I'm a researcher at an NSF funded FFRDC)

this is the same for many fields in science. Mainly because there's a lot of coding in data analysis, which is what science is. If you wanna do math, become a theorist

I enjoy astrophysics, but when really smart people talk about it with cool visual effects and its dumbed down like 50%.

If you’re interested in majoring in Astrophysics and have no coding background, are there any resources you recommend to start learning how to code?

Half of my work is coding and analyzing data from the LHC/CERN. The other half is physically building new detectors that will go into a new upgrade of the LHC in 2030. I learned I love building and testing the scientific equipment and instruments much more than the coding part
