@jeremyallandmd: I stopped taking creatine and my leg symptoms went away. So I did what any sports medicine physician would do. I went looking for the research. Turns out the literature on this goes back over 20 years. Here is what it shows. Creatine pulls water into muscle cells through an osmotic effect. In the rigid fascial compartments of the lower leg, that increased volume has nowhere to go. Pressure builds. In a randomized controlled trial, Schroeder et al. found post-exercise compartment pressures increased by 150% compared to placebo after just 6 days of supplementation. Potteiger et al. followed subjects through 34 days on creatine and then off it. Pressures reached 109 mmHg at peak. Normal is under 35. After 21 days off creatine, pressures had dropped but were still nearly double normal. None of this means creatine is dangerous for everyone. The evidence for its benefits is real. But like any supplement or medication, there are people who tolerate it well and people who don't. I am one of the people who does not tolerate it. I stopped taking it. I am not losing sleep over it.
