If your brakes fail on a highway, you *don’t turn off the car* because it makes things way more dangerous. Here’s why: *1. You lose power steering + power brakes* Once the engine’s off, your steering wheel gets super stiff and hard to turn. Brakes also need engine power - without it, even emergency braking becomes almost impossible. *2. You lose engine braking* Your engine actually helps slow the car down. If you turn it off, you lose that drag. Instead, you downshift to lower gears - the engine slows the wheels for you. That’s called “engine braking”. *3. You lose control + safety features* No engine = no ABS, no hazard lights, no ability to accelerate if you need to swerve out of danger. And if you turn the key all the way, the steering wheel can lock. At highway speed that’s a crash waiting to happen. *What you actually do instead:* 1. *Stay calm + hazards on* - alert other drivers 2. *Pump the brake pedal fast* - sometimes builds pressure if there’s still fluid 3. *Downshift* - drop from D → 3 → 2 → 1/L. Engine slows you down 4. *Use emergency/parking brake* - pull it up slowly, don’t yank it 5. *Look for escape* - shoulder, uphill ramp, grass, rumble strips Turning off the car = no control. Keeping it on = you still have steering + engine to slow you. You taking a driving test or just curious?

The car is still in motion, switching off the car doesn’t stop the car. Because the key controls the electric motor which gives the engine power to start. The car engine and gears are mechanical components.
