San Diego’s once-celebrated JuneShine is closing its final company-owned tasting rooms, marking the end of the brand’s physical presence after years of rapidly expanding from a local hard kombucha startup into a nationally distributed beverage company. Less than five months after announcing it would cease brewing operations in San Diego, outsource production, eliminate local manufacturing jobs and sell its flagship Scripps Ranch brewery, JuneShine has confirmed it will permanently close its final two tasting rooms. In a statement posted Sunday, the company announced its Scripps Ranch and Santa Monica locations will permanently close following business on August 28. “There’s no easy way to say this: our beloved Santa Monica and Scripps Ranch tasting rooms are closing,” the company wrote. “This was certainly not a decision that came easy, but the right one for what’s next.” JuneShine thanked customers for their support and encouraged fans to visit during what it called “The Last Splash,” while emphasizing its beverages will continue to be available at grocery stores, retailers and bars nationwide. Founded in 2018 by University of San Diego classmates Greg Serrao and Forrest Dein, JuneShine launched in North Park as California’s first organic hard kombucha brewery before quickly becoming one of San Diego’s fastest-growing beverage companies. The company acquired the former Ballast Point headquarters in Scripps Ranch in 2019, transforming the roughly 30,000-square-foot facility into its flagship brewery and tasting room. It also announced plans to relocate its original North Park taproom into a larger space at The Jackson development, but that location never opened. By 2021, JuneShine had raised $24 million in funding to expand brewing capacity, hire employees and grow the business around San Diego. The following year, the company unveiled plans for nationwide expansion, including a Brooklyn tasting room and broader ambitions to become a “better-for-you” beverage platform beyond hard kombucha. Those plans gradually unraveled. The Brooklyn location closed in 2024, and earlier this year JuneShine confirmed it would end brewing operations in San Diego, transition to contract manufacturing and sell its Scripps Ranch brewery as part of a strategy focused on improving efficiency and profitability. The upcoming closures complete that transformation. JuneShine will no longer operate any known company-owned tasting rooms or breweries, instead continuing as a nationally distributed beverage brand whose products are manufactured by outside partners. Taken together, the company has now closed its original North Park tasting room, abandoned plans for its replacement, shuttered its Brooklyn location, ended San Diego brewing operations, listed its flagship brewery for sale and will soon close its final California tasting rooms. “JuneShine isn’t going anywhere,” the company wrote. “You’ll still find us on shelves, at your favorite watering holes, and out in the real world.” SanDiegoVille has contacted JuneShine seeking comment on whether additional employees will be affected and whether the company intends to maintain any physical presence in San Diego. This article will be updated if a response is received.
