To see that which is not there, you have to unsee that which is there. You have to suspend what is visible in order to perceive what is hidden behind it. This applies to everything in life—from how you perceive people, things, and behavior, to your craft and even yourself. Seeing is wisdom. That is why wisdom is represented in many cultures and traditions as the eye. To attain wisdom, we must learn to see. But not the regular kind of seeing. We must learn to see that which is not there. The hidden motivations behind people's actions. The invisible patterns beneath events. The assumptions beneath our beliefs. The silence between words. The space between thoughts. The essence beneath appearances. But to see what is hidden, we must first suspend what is visible. We must look beyond the labels, beyond the stories, beyond the surface-level explanations that present themselves so readily to the mind. Most people stop at what is obvious. Wisdom begins where the obvious ends. The eye of wisdom does not merely see what is present; it sees what is absent. It sees not only what is being shown, but also what is being concealed. And often, what is concealed is more important than what is revealed. To see that which is not there, you must first learn to unsee that which is.
