@mc_choir: Ways to tell that your feedback is unsolicited: -Does it begin with, "you should do..." or "you shouldn't do..."? -Do you justify your advice by stating that your opinion carries some level of authority? (i.e., "as someone who has been an organist for 30 years...") -Does your feedback have more to do with showcasing how you would have done it as opposed to how it was done? -Is your feedback offered with a lack of kindness and Christian charity? (Good litmus test: would you feel comfortable with your feedback if it was offered in front of your local bishop?) Ways to offer solicited feedback with charity: -Ask if they are open to some feedback. "Are you open to some feedback on your hymn playing?" -Praise in public, correct in private. Can you take this person out for coffee or send them a private message/email? -Begin with a desire to understand and move towards a common goal: "I know we both value participation in congregational singing, so can you help me understand the new hymn selections?" -Keep the conversation focused on positive development. Don't harp on the negative: say what needs to be said, and offer suggestions for improvement in a positive direction focused on growth and development. -Avoid oversharing your own success as a good example to emulate, and stay focused on the topic at hand with the individual. #churchmusic #churchmusician #catholic #catholicmusic #catholicmusician
